Thousands of homes to be built on Green Belt
Tens of thousands of homes and offices could be built on protected Green Belt land across England, a Government-backed report said yesterday.
It called for local and regional authorities to conduct a wholesale review of Green Belt boundaries, which have prevented the sprawl of towns and cities since the 1950s, as part of the biggest shake-up of planning policies for decades.Kate Barker, a member of the Bank of England's monetary policy committee and the report's author, said the population was set to rise to 55 million by 2026 — partly as a result of record immigration. She called for more land to be released for housing, particularly in areas where house prices were the highest.
